An American father and his 15-year-old son tragically died after being stung by hundreds of hornets while zip lining in Laos.
Daniel Owen and his son Cooper, who lived in Vietnam, were attacked by a swarm of Asian giant hornets at Green Jungle Park near Luang Prabang in early October. Owen was about to turn 47 or had recently done so.
They were stung as they were descending from a tree with their guide at the adventure resort.
The pair were initially taken to Phakan Arocavet Clinic, where the staff confirmed the incident. Doctor Phanomsay Phakan noted the information given was brief and did not provide further details.
Though Owen and Cooper were conscious upon arrival and showed no immediate signs of anaphylactic shock, they died a few hours later after being transferred to a hospital.
Department of State spokesperson: "Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones during this difficult time, we have no further comment."
This tragic event highlights the dangers of encounters with aggressive wildlife in adventure tourism, even when initial medical signs appear stable.
