The San Antonio Spurs’ impressive start to the season has somewhat overshadowed the consistent and underrated play of forward Julian Champagnie, whose contract situation remains unresolved.
Champagnie had a remarkable preseason, hitting 19 of 30 shots from three-point range, establishing himself as one of the NBA’s best value deals. Standing 6-foot-8, his blend of size, shooting, and defensive hustle turned him into a key rotation player. He may not be an elite stopper, but he’s far from a defensive weakness.
The Spurs initially signed Champagnie midway through the 2022–23 season as a low-cost free agent, then re-signed him to a four-year, $12 million contract. Given his production and growth, that deal looks like a bargain.
If he were to reach unrestricted free agency, Champagnie could earn at least four times his current salary.
With this being the final guaranteed year of his deal, San Antonio faces a straightforward choice. Extending him before free agency — perhaps with a four-year, $40 million offer — would secure his services through the 2029–30 season and lock in one of the best value contributors on the roster.
San Antonio should act swiftly to extend Julian Champagnie, whose combination of shooting, defense, and value makes him an essential piece for the team's long-term plans.
