Former India batter Robin Uthappa shared insights about Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling challenges in the second T20I against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Uthappa suggested that Bumrah tends to lose his usual rhythm when trying too hard to take wickets.
Speaking on Star Sports, Uthappa noted that Bumrah’s rare off day, despite taking two wickets for 26 runs in four overs, came as a result of overexertion to influence the game. India defended a modest total of 125, but Australia comfortably chased it down within 14 overs, gaining a 1-0 series lead.
“When we were bowling after scoring 125, the start was very important. If we had picked up two or three wickets in the first three or four overs, the game could have been closer because we have quality spinners in the middle overs. I felt we were probably trying too hard to pick up wickets. So we got a little wayward.”
Uthappa emphasized the critical need for a strong early bowling performance. He believed Bumrah’s occasional waywardness was linked to his eagerness to strike early, which compromised his usual control and discipline.
This observation highlights how mental pressure can affect even top-level players like Bumrah, impacting their consistency during crucial moments.
