Elon Musk aimed to make xAI's Grok chatbot the world’s most popular, focusing on a female chatbot named Ani as central to this goal. To enhance the chatbot’s interactions, Musk instructed employees to provide biometric data during the development process.
After leaving The White House following a major disagreement with the president, Musk devoted himself to work at xAI. He based himself at the Palo Alto office, sometimes even sleeping there, to advance Grok’s AI capabilities amid a fierce competitive race in artificial intelligence.
The chatbot development effort is part of a broader AI competition, with Sam Altman’s OpenAI leading the U.S. side against China in pursuit of advanced "artificial general intelligence."
A month before Musk’s deep involvement, company lawyer Lily Lim informed employees about the creation of multiple avatars designed to interact with Grok users. One such avatar, Ani, was described by PC Magazine as a “sexy, NSFW, anime AI chatbotgirl.”
“Employees were told they must hand over their biometric data in order to train the chatbots on how to act and talk like human beings.”
This data was integral to programming chatbot behaviors and speech patterns that mimic human interaction.
Elon Musk’s intense focus on AI development included leveraging employee biometric data to create a provocative chatbot aimed at dominating the AI chatbot market, illustrating the high stakes of the ongoing AI race.
