Team Backgrounds and Expectations

Finland enters the Games strong after winning their first-ever gold medal in ice hockey at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, aiming to repeat their success.

Canada, with nine Olympic golds in ice hockey, last topped the podium in 2014 at Sochi. The team did not earn a medal in 2022 but hopes to return to form in 2026.

NHL Players Set to Return

The 2026 Winter Olympics will mark the first time since 2014 that NHL players can participate, reviving a tradition that ran from 1998 to 2014. The NHL had previously halted involvement in 2018 due to scheduling conflicts with the regular season. However, a mid-season break in 2026 will allow players to compete for their national teams.

"NHL players could partake in the Winter Olympics from 1998 to 2014, but the NHL stopped allowing player participation in 2018 since the games come in the middle of the season."

The league will pause its season to permit NHL players to represent their countries on the Olympic stage once again.
