Scott Buchholz, Opposition skills and training spokesman, urged observers not to confuse Sussan Ley’s “feminine politeness for weakness.” The Queensland MP contrasted Ley’s style with that of her predecessor, Peter Dutton, calling Dutton’s leadership “authoritarian.” Buchholz also criticized Victorian Liberal senator Sarah Henderson for remarks she made earlier.
“I see Sussan doing incredible things, given the circumstances that she’s been having to do with it. I think what the party’s struggling with is the style of leadership that Susan brings.”
Buchholz emphasized the shift in leadership style, stating:
“Don’t mistake her feminine politeness for weakness. We have come from a previous leadership style of authoritarian [under Dutton] to now a consultative, and some people mistake that, but there are just different styles of leadership.”
Initially unaware of Henderson’s critical remarks about Ley’s leadership, Buchholz described her comments as “career-limiting” after being informed.
He noted the party is still recovering from its election defeat in May and requires time to heal from this difficult period.
