Filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg, best known for revitalizing the Predator franchise, recently revealed his creative vision for a sequel to Kevin Costner's 1995 sci-fi adventure Waterworld. The director shared his thoughts ahead of the theatrical release of Predator: Badlands.
Speaking to Collider during the red-carpet event, Trachtenberg explained that rather than returning to the big screen, he envisions Waterworld reborn in an interactive format. He expressed a desire to see the story continued through gaming media rather than film.
"The thing about Waterworld that I want to see is a video game," said Trachtenberg. "I want to see an open-world third-person action-adventure game that isn’t a remake but a true sequel to the movie. That’s what I want to see."
Trachtenberg’s proposal finds precedent in other cinematic properties successfully translated to games. For example, Ghostbusters: The Video Game served as a direct continuation of the film series, set two years after Ghostbusters II. The 2009 title followed a new recruit joining the ghost-hunting team in New York City to investigate supernatural happenings.
Waterworld, long known for its ambitious premise and mixed critical reception, might find new life through interactive storytelling. Trachtenberg’s idea positions the world’s flooded landscapes and survival themes as an ideal setting for open-world exploration.
Author’s summary: Dan Trachtenberg proposes reviving Kevin Costner’s Waterworld as an open-world video game sequel, echoing similar successes in cinematic-to-gaming crossovers.
