Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello, directed by Tom Morris, is currently showing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket until 17 January 2026.
Nearly 30 years ago, David Harewood was the first Black actor to play Othello at the National Theatre. Now, he returns to the role of the Moorish general whose trust in Iago’s poisonous lies leads to his downfall.
Harewood has said his 1997 portrayal was marked by intense emotional outbursts, “balling and screaming” with rage at accusations against Desdemona and Iago’s betrayal. In this refined West End production, he starts off embodying a man shaped by experience and wisdom. Yet, as Iago’s manipulation takes hold, Othello devolves into a volatile and reckless figure, blinded to the true nature of those around him.
Harewood finds an ideal foil in Toby Jones, who plays Iago with a skillful wickedness that brings the play’s cunning intrigues to life.
“Who could pull off such complex trickery? Harewood has a wonderfully wicked scene partner in Toby Jones.”
This production captures the tragic unraveling of Othello with a compelling performance that balances intensity and subtlety.
David Harewood’s mature take on Othello, matched with Toby Jones’ devious Iago, presents a gripping and nuanced rendition of Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy.
