Jim Belushi reveals what it was really like to watch his brother John get into ‘Blues Brothers’ role

Jim Belushi recalls watching his brother John embody the ‘Blues Brothers’ role

Jim Belushi recently shared one of his most cherished Hollywood memories, reflecting on his late brother John Belushi’s transformation into his iconic “Blues Brothers” role.

“I loved that moment, to see my brother just hit the top of his chart.”

John Belushi rose to fame as part of the original “Saturday Night Live” cast in 1975. Together with his co-star Dan Aykroyd, he developed the comedic duo The Blues Brothers, which eventually evolved into a real blues and soul band.

The pair first introduced the act on “SNL” in April 1978. Later that year, they performed live as openers for Steve Martin’s comedy tour at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles.

“I’ll tell you what I loved: I loved going to the Universal Amphitheater when they came to LA and they opened for Steve Martin,” Jim Belushi said during the premiere of his film “Song Sung Blue” at AFI Fest in Hollywood. “And John was so, so magnificent.”

Tragically, John’s life was cut short on March 5, 1982, due to a suspected drug overdose. Following his brother’s death, Jim later stepped into the role of Zee Blues alongside Aykroyd’s Elwood at Aykroyd’s invitation.
