ELMONT, NY -- During the New York Islanders’ home opener, Matthew Schaefer scored his first NHL goal. The 18-year-old defenseman achieved this milestone in the third period against the Washington Capitals.
Down 4-1, the Islanders went to the power play, and after a scramble, Schaefer scored, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery challenged the goal, but it stood after a review.
Schaefer also scored his first assist and point in the Islanders’ first game of the season against the Pittsburgh Penguins. This adds to his early accomplishments.
The goal stood after a lengthy review, much to the delight of a roaring UBS Arena.
