A retired STARS air ambulance helicopter now resides permanently at The Hangar Flight Museum in Calgary. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, STARS announced that the Airbus BK117 aircraft, which began service in 1985, was part of the original fleet that launched the non-profit air ambulance service.
This helicopter supported numerous missions throughout Western Canada until its retirement from active duty.
“Now, in our 40th year, this historic aircraft stands as a symbol of the remarkable contributions made by the community, for the community,” STARS stated.
The organization revealed that over 100 donors helped raise more than $900,000 through a campaign supporting STARS operations, with their names proudly displayed on the helicopter.
The Hangar Flight Museum expressed its honour in a separate Facebook post, calling the aircraft “an inspiring legacy” that will preserve the story of STARS for generations to come.
The helicopter’s new role at the museum ensures the ongoing recognition of STARS’ vital impact on air ambulance services.
Summary: The original STARS BK117 helicopter, retired after decades of service, now serves as a lasting tribute to community support and air ambulance history at Calgary’s Hangar Flight Museum.
