A Calgary judge has dismissed Sobeys Capital Inc.’s bid to stop striking Teamsters from picketing at the company’s stores in Calgary. The picketers are employees at Sobeys’ Rocky View County distribution centre and a refrigerated warehouse in southeast Calgary.
Judge Feasby of the Court of King’s Bench issued written reasons on November 7, 2025, refusing to set aside a decision by the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) that permits Teamsters Local 987 to continue picketing Sobeys’ city locations amid an ongoing strike and lockout involving 251 warehouse and delivery workers.
The judge's ruling supports the ALRB’s decision from October 15, 2025 (2025 ALRB 126), which recognized the Calgary Sobeys outlets as legitimate “places of work” for the striking employees. This designation allows picketing at Sobeys-owned sites but excludes franchised locations.
“The Calgary outlets were deemed legitimate ‘places of work’ for the striking and locked-out employees,” stated the ALRB ruling.
Judge Feasby’s decision confirms the labour board's authority to permit targeted picketing during the labour dispute, upholding workers’ rights to protest at their recognized workplaces.
