Ethan Hawke on Future Collaborations with Richard Linklater

Actor Ethan Hawke has reunited with filmmaker Richard Linklater for their ninth project, titled Blue Moon. Their creative partnership continues to inspire discussions about what the two might do next.

Thoughts on The Black Phone 2 and a Possible Third Film

Hawke recently returned to his villainous role in The Black Phone 2, which opened strongly at the box office with $26.5 million over its first weekend. The actor has expressed enthusiasm for exploring the character further.

“I would like to go to hell with the Grabber. That would be my dream for the third one, to let it be a character piece about what made him, who he is now, and how he’s haunting other people’s dreams.”

Views on Continuing the Before Trilogy

Despite audience hopes for another installment in the Before series with Julie Delpy and Linklater, Hawke believes the trilogy is complete. In an interview with Variety, he reflected on the full-circle nature of the story.

“The answer I usually give is that the three films feel complete. The first one begins with us on a train listening to a couple in their mid-40s fighting, and in the third one, we’ve become that couple. The circle feels complete.”

Possibility of a New Direction

Hawke did hint, however, that a fresh concept could emerge someday, perhaps outside the Before framework.

“If we were to do another, it might not be a Before film. It could be something new — maybe the After series. But part of what made those movies special is that Julie, Rick, and I were always in sync about what we wanted to say. That could happen again one day — it might start with one phone call or an email.”
Author’s Summary

Ethan Hawke remains open to new ideas with Richard Linklater but views the Before trilogy as a finished story, while finding renewed creative energy in genre films like The Black Phone.
