GOP Tries To Weaken Law Protecting Whales, Seals And Polar Bears
A bill has support from Maine fishermen and lobbyists for big-money species such as tuna in Hawaiʻi and crab in Alaska.
Republican lawmakers are targeting the Marine Mammal Protection Act, enacted in 1972 to protect whales, seals, polar bears and other sea animals.
The law restricts commercial fishermen, shippers and other marine industries.
Conservative leaders feel they now have the political will to remove key pieces of the law.
