Aryna Sabalenka began her pursuit of a first WTA Finals title with a strong victory over eighth seed Jasmine Paolini on Sunday. Sabalenka dominated the match, winning 6-3, 6-1 in a 70-minute contest.
Paolini aimed to become the first Italian in ten years to defeat a current WTA No. 1 player, but Sabalenka's commanding performance included 24 winners and 11 aces.
Sabalenka broke Paolini's serve five times and lost her own serve only once, marking her sixth Tour-level win against the Italian.
"We played (against each other) a lot and every time it’s a tough battle. Doesn’t matter what the score," Sabalenka said during her on-court interview. "I know that I always have to stay focused. If you give her an opportunity, she’s going to step in and take control of the game."
"I’m mostly happy with my focus today. I felt like everything was in control."
Sabalenka is competing in the year-end tournament for the fifth consecutive season. Her best result came in 2022 when she reached the final but lost to Caroline Garcia.
