'Death by Lightning' Stars on Bringing Timely Tale of Garfield & Guiteau to TV

Death by Lightning Brings Garfield and Guiteau's Story to TV

Death by Lightning premiered on Netflix, depicting the tragic tale of President James Garfield (played by Michael Shannon) and his assassin Charles Guiteau (Matthew Macfadyen). The series is based on Candice Millard’s 2011 book, Destiny of the Republic, and is brought to life by showrunner Mike Makowsky.

Showrunner's Inspiration

Mike Makowsky shares how he was drawn to adapt Millard’s work:

“I have to confess I knew almost nothing about Garfield. I was really just blown away by the quality of her writing and the story itself.”

He adds,

“I found [the book] at the buy-two-get-one-free table at my local Barnes and Noble, and I needed a third book and I picked it up… I ended up reading the book in one sitting.”

Binge-Worthy Storytelling

The show consists of four fast-paced episodes that make the story compelling and easy to binge. It opens by introducing Garfield as a modest supporter who rises to prominence after delivering a powerful speech that secures him the Republican nomination in 1880.

Michael Shannon on Garfield's Speech

“It’s one of the most eloquent speeches in the history of American oratory, I feel. I didn’t really have to do much other than say it out loud.”

Strong Ensemble Cast

The series shines a light on a lesser-known chapter of American history with a talented cast and gripping narrative.

Author’s summary: This four-part Netflix series powerfully revives the story of President Garfield and his assassin, combining stellar performances with engaging storytelling inspired by Candice Millard’s acclaimed book.
