FOLSOM – The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is investigating an attempted homicide involving two peace officers at California State Prison, Sacramento (SAC).

Incident Details

On January 1, 2025, around 7 p.m., inmate Jason Brannigan, 48, allegedly attacked two officers using an improvised weapon while being escorted from his cell for a routine cell search. Staff responded with physical force and chemical agents to quickly subdue the assault. An improvised weapon was recovered at the scene.

Officer Conditions and Response

The two officers were promptly taken to the facility's triage area and then transferred to an external medical center. Both remain hospitalized in fair condition. Brannigan was moved to restricted housing as the investigation proceeds.
