A social media influencer touring aquatic attractions across China has revealed serious issues related to water quality, staff training, and inaccurate signage in many aquariums. Wu Zhuolin, a lifelong lover of aquatic life, began visiting aquariums nationwide in late 2023, sharing candid reviews in short social media videos after each visit.
Wu now has about 1 million followers, many shocked by the poor standards he has exposed throughout China’s expanding aquarium scene.
China has roughly 300 aquariums, with around 60% constructed since 2010. Originally focused on scientific research and education, many facilities have shifted toward commercial entertainment to boost tourism.
“Most of the problems plaguing China’s aquariums can be traced to the industry’s overly rapid development,” says Shi Zhe, founder of the Asian Academy of Aquarium Technology, a Chinese NGO uniting researchers, academics, and industry professionals.
Wu Zhuolin’s ongoing coverage highlights urgent welfare concerns amid the fast growth of the aquarium industry in China.
