The Pitt women’s basketball team lost its home opener on Tuesday night, 68-60, to Drexel at the Petersen Events Center. Mikayla Johnson led the Panthers with 19 points, while Angel Jones contributed 10. Fatima Diakhate topped the team in rebounds with eight. Four Panthers made their first starts for Pitt: Johnson, Jones, Diakhate, Jayda Queeley, and Megan Hollingsworth, who also started their first collegiate games.
Six Panthers scored in the first quarter, giving Pitt a narrow 14-12 lead after ten minutes. Drexel countered in the second quarter, outpacing Pitt 18-13 to take a three-point advantage into halftime. The Panthers battled back in the third, scoring 22 points to tie the game at 49 heading into the final quarter.
The final period was closely contested as both teams exchanged baskets. A late Drexel three-pointer broke the tie, putting the Dragons up by five. They sealed the victory by converting three of four free throws in the final 21 seconds.
