Behind Cam Corhen's Double-Double, Pitt Cruises to Season-Opening Win Over Youngstown State

After two preseason exhibitions, coach Jeff Capel’s revamped Pitt basketball team faced a competitive test Monday at the Petersen Events Center against Youngstown State of the Horizon League, picked to finish fourth in their conference. The Penguins started strong and managed to keep a lead despite Youngstown State narrowing it to four points midway through the second half.

The Panthers secured a 74-59 victory, fueled by Cam Corhen’s outstanding performance. Corhen led both teams with 23 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 8 of 12 from the field.

“It’s great to get a win in our first game,” Capel said. “That’s a really good team that we beat, a team that’s going to have a chance to win their league. … I thought we settled into the game defensively, made things difficult for them and that got us going a little bit offensively.”

Supporting Corhen, Brandin Cummings added 18 points, while Nojus Indrusaitis came off the bench to contribute 13. As a team, Pitt shot 43.4% from the floor (23 of 53) and dominated the boards, outrebounding Youngstown State 46-24.

The first basket of the season for Pitt was a 3-pointer by Cummings, cutting an early Youngstown State lead to 7-3 about three minutes into the game. Continuing a trend from their preseason matches, the Panthers fell behind early as Youngstown State extended its lead to 14-6 with an alley-oop dunk by Imanuel Zorgvol at 14:31 before halftime.

Author's summary: Pitt’s strong defense and Cam Corhen’s double-double propelled them to a confident 74-59 season opener win against a tough Youngstown State team.
