Australia’s Most Haunted House Hits the Market for One Brave Buyer

Monte Cristo, located in Junee, NSW, about 470km southwest of Sydney, is being sold to a buyer brave enough to overlook its eerie reputation. This Victorian-era manor, known as Australia's most haunted house, has a history full of ghost stories and legends spanning over 140 years.

History and Haunted Reputation

The estate is believed to be haunted by up to ten spirits. It is a well-known Riverina landmark, functioning for years as a museum and tourist attraction with regular tours and overnight stays.

Ghostly Experiences at Monte Cristo

Olive Ryan, who lived in the house for 50 years, shared with The Project in 2015: "I've had a hand on my shoulder. I've had my name called when I've been here by myself. It's nothing to hear footsteps on the balcony and you go out and there's no one there."

Olive believed the spirits of the original owners, Christopher and Elizabeth Crawley, who died in 1910 and 1933, still inhabit the house. Her son Lawrence, raised in the mansion during his childhood, also sensed a constant watchful presence.

Architectural Features

The double-storey residence, located at 1 Homestead Lane, retains original fireplaces and includes a ballroom, adding to its historic charm.
