Wicked: For Good continues the story of Elphaba and Glinda, featuring two new original songs in addition to familiar numbers from the second act of the Broadway musical. The film aims to deepen the audience’s understanding of both witches’ journeys.
The sequel picks up where the first film ended — with Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, delivering her powerful rendition of “Defying Gravity” after she and Glinda (portrayed by Ariana Grande) discovered that the Wizard, portrayed by Jeff Goldblum, was a fraud. This follow-up will explore what happens next, adding emotional layers to the beloved story.
“Both witches are trying to find their way home,” said director Jon M. Chu in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in September 2025. “Both of these songs are about how to do that, and it’s questions that I’ve always wanted to hear from them in the stage show, but never got to. We get to take our time and explore those questions.”
Both songs were written by Stephen Schwartz, the original composer of Wicked. Viewers were given a first listen to the new numbers during NBC’s Wicked: One Wonderful Night special, which aired before the film’s November 2025 premiere.
The sequel Wicked: For Good introduces two heartfelt songs that expand Elphaba and Glinda’s emotional journeys, enriching the world of Oz with new depth and resonance.
