Jay Som is the musical project of Melina Duterte, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. Her new album Belong was released on November 7. Ahead of the album launch, she shared the track "Past Lives," which features Hayley Williams of Paramore.
The collaboration came about when the artists met in Nashville to work on a song together, along with Steph Marziano. Williams’ gentle harmonies in "Past Lives" enhance the song’s melancholic mood, capturing the feeling of drifting through moments of hope and loss. The song’s intense middle section feels like an internal struggle brought to life.
“It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album before the recording of 'Float,' I still can’t believe it happened,” Duterte remarked about the collaboration.
“She’s one of the kindest artists out there and she graciously accepts and uplifts the people around her. We’re all so lucky to witness her talent and live on the same timeline as her.”
The album Belong includes contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (Mk.gee, Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (producer for Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. Jay Som also invited guest vocalists for the first time on this project.
Belong was released through Polyvinyl Record Co.
