Daniel Day-Lewis takes no responsibility for Jeremy Strong

Daniel Day-Lewis rejects claims of responsibility for Jeremy Strong’s Method acting

During Daniel Day-Lewis’s break from acting, speculation arose about his use of Method acting and its impact on fellow actors. Brian Cox, known for his criticism of the technique, suggested that Day-Lewis’s deep commitment to Method acting led to burnout and early retirement.

Cox also lamented that his Succession co-star Jeremy Strong may have taken his acting approach from Day-Lewis, whom he once admired and worked under. However, Day-Lewis firmly distanced himself from that notion.

“Listen, I worked with Brian Cox once and got somehow drawn into this handbags-at-dawn conflict inadvertently. Brian is a very fine actor who’s done extraordinary work. As a result, he’s been given a soapbox… which he shows no sign of climbing down from. Any time he wants to talk about it, I’m easy to find,”

Day-Lewis added that he would be disturbed if he had interfered with Cox’s process but believes that was not the case.

“So I don’t know where that came from. Jeremy Strong is a very fine actor; I don’t know how he goes about things, but I don’t feel responsible in any way for that.”

The actor emphasized that Method acting is not a doctrine he spreads or imposes on others. He maintains that its influence on co-stars is limited, a sentiment echoed by Strong himself.

“It’s a very solitary thing.”

Author’s summary:
