A panel of experts shared their insights on the first Kiwi derby of the A-League season between Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix.
Michael Burgess invited a former All White (2000) and Wellington Phoenix veteran with 181 appearances—ranked fourth in club history—to weigh in on the derby.
"The Wellington Phoenix are due a win in the derby and being at home gives them a great opportunity for that first victory. They are building nicely and look much more balanced and cohesive than last season. Auckland FC will be tough – given all their experience in big matches and the recent record – but the Phoenix are capable. I feel like striker Ifeanyi Eze will get the winner, to become an instant hero. The Nigerian is a handful up front and has already helped to create plenty of good chances this year."
The former coach, who is also a former All White (1980-1989) and New Zealand head coach (2005-2013), added his view on the tactical approach.
"The Phoenix are looking to play a far more expansive style of play this season so goalscoring opportunities should be more frequent. They are also employing a high line defensively, which may enable Auckland FC options to play directly in behind, which was a strong counter-attacking trait for them last season."
This coach is a three-time New Zealand player of the year.
