Question Ariarne Hasn’t Faced Since Her Shock Announcement

Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus has shared the one question no one has asked her since her unexpected decision to retire from competitive swimming. The four-time gold medallist opened up about the public's reaction and her own emotions during a recent appearance on the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About.

“I knew it would be a shock to a lot of people. It was quite out of the blue,” Titmus told host Sarrah Le Marquand. “But I certainly wasn’t expecting the reception I received.”

It was the first long interview Titmus has given since announcing her retirement. She described how quickly the news spread after her social media post.

“The morning I hit post at 8am Brisbane time, within half an hour, all over social media there were already articles and clips,” she recalled.

Despite being at the pinnacle of her career, Titmus said she was ready for change and new challenges ahead.

“I am at the top of my game, I’m still only 25, and I was concerned that the wider public wouldn’t understand my reasoning. But I haven’t had one person asking me why.”

She noted that a turning point came while commentating during the World Championships in July, which helped her realize she was content with what she had achieved in the pool.
