In Amherst, Massachusetts, over 200 residents, including many University of Massachusetts students, were forced to evacuate after a three-alarm fire broke out late Friday night. The blaze consumed an apartment complex at 57 Olympia Drive, which served as off-campus housing for UMass students.
Firefighters from across western Massachusetts responded and continued battling the flames through the night. Another nearby building under construction on Olympia Drive was also destroyed, with partial collapses reported in surrounding structures.
“One four-story building under construction has collapsed and other nearby buildings remain on fire and partially collapsed. The fire response has been hindered by low water pressure in the area,” stated an early Saturday press release.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported. The Amherst Fire Department described the incident as “one of the largest fires our community has ever seen.”
“Crews worked tirelessly through the night — with help from our mutual aid partners — to stop the spread and protect lives,” said the department in a social media post.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with local and university officials assisting displaced residents and students.
