In Amherst, Massachusetts, a fire erupted Friday night in an apartment complex that serves as off-campus housing for numerous University of Massachusetts students. The three-alarm blaze devastated a building at 57 Olympia Drive, displacing more than 200 residents.

Fire Impact and Response

Firefighters from across western Massachusetts remain on site managing the fire. Landmarks affected include an apartment complex and a building under construction on Olympia Drive, both of which were destroyed in the incident.

"One four-story building that was under construction has collapsed and other buildings nearby are still burning, and have partially collapsed," a Saturday morning press release stated. "The fire attack has been hampered by poor water pressure in the area."

Despite the extensive damage, town and school officials have confirmed that no injuries have been reported.

"Crews worked tirelessly through the night — with help from our mutual aid partners — to stop the spread and protect lives," said the Amherst Fire Department on social media.

The department described the blaze as "one of the largest fires our community has seen."

Investigation Ongoing

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Summary: A destructive three-alarm fire in Amherst displaced over 200 residents, including many UMass students, with no injuries reported; emergency crews continue efforts while cause is investigated.
