Pete Davidson considers Eddie Murphy not just a hero but a trusted friend and mentor. In an interview with PEOPLE, the 31-year-old comedian shared heartfelt reflections on their bond and the lessons he has learned from Murphy, 64.
Davidson revealed that his admiration for Murphy started in childhood. He recalled how an unexpected purchase by his mother sparked his love for comedy.
"I've been a fan of Eddie Murphy since I was five or six, when my mom bought me 'Delirious' from FYE," he said. "That little mistake made me fall in love with stand-up."
Both comedians began their careers on Saturday Night Live, which became a turning point for their success in entertainment. Davidson joined the show at age 20 and remained for eight seasons, while Murphy started at 19 and stayed for five.
Davidson notes that their connection extends beyond the stage. They share deeply personal experiences that shaped their paths in comedy.
"We have a lot of similarities in our personal lives as well. We both lost our dads when we were young… and that was one of the reasons we got into comedy," he said.
Davidson expressed gratitude for Murphy’s mentorship and understanding, emphasizing how meaningful it is to learn from someone who has faced similar challenges and triumphs.
Davidson sees Eddie Murphy as both an idol and a mentor whose shared experiences, warmth, and guidance have had a lasting impact on his personal and professional growth.
