From her beginnings as a chorus pig to becoming a feminist icon, Miss Piggy is officially taking center stage in her own Disney film. The project is being co-produced by Golden Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence and her fellow Academy Award recipient Emma Stone.
Lawrence revealed the news during a recent appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast.
“I don’t know if I can announce this, but I’m just gonna. Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie,”
she said, adding that Cole Escola, star of the Broadway hit Oh, Mary!, is writing the screenplay. When asked if she and Stone would appear in the movie, Lawrence replied:
“I think so,”
and jokingly commented that it was odd they haven’t yet shared the screen.
Lawrence elaborated on the film’s roots during an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. She explained that the idea emerged during the pandemic lockdown, at a time when “cancel culture” was dominating discussions.
“She said, ‘Miss Piggy is a feminist icon. It would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled,’”
Lawrence remembered. She clarified that while that isn’t the actual plot, it inspired the creative process for the movie.
Miss Piggy first appeared as a background character on The Muppet Show in the mid-1970s. She later rose to stardom in the late 1970s and early 1980s, becoming one of the show’s most beloved figures. Known for her glamorous persona and her tumultuous relationship with Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy remains one of pop culture’s most enduring characters.
Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone are producing a Disney film spotlighting Miss Piggy, reviving the iconic Muppet star who blends comedy, glamour, and bold feminist energy.
