T.J. Watt and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ dominant defense against the Indianapolis Colts surely made Dick LeBeau proud. This occasion also marked their first meeting. LeBeau returned to Pittsburgh to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Super Bowl XL winning team, finally allowing the two to introduce themselves.
“It took nine years, but I’m glad. I mean, obviously he’s a busy guy, but to be able to meet the legend himself was very surreal.” — T.J. Watt, in a weekly interview with WMBS’ George Von Benko
LeBeau was among many Steelers honored at Week 10’s game and recognized on the field during halftime. Other notable alumni present included quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Jerome Bettis, and defensive lineman Aaron Smith.
As a coach and player, LeBeau and Watt missed crossing paths by several seasons. LeBeau's last season in Pittsburgh was 2014, whereas Watt entered the NFL in 2017. In 2014, LeBeau served as the Tennessee Titans’ defensive coordinator in his final coaching year. That season, Pittsburgh defeated Tennessee 40-17, with Watt recording two tackles, but the two did not connect after the game.
“Anytime those guys come back, it’s awesome. And to be able to be recognized for their Super Bowl is awesome. To just see all those guys back in town and see how tight-knit they are.” — T.J. Watt
This event highlighted the respect and bond shared between current and past Steelers legends across generations.
Author's note: T.J. Watt’s long-awaited meeting with Dick LeBeau underscores the enduring legacy and close camaraderie among Pittsburgh Steelers across eras.
