New 2026 Toyota Hilux Unveiled
Toyota has revealed what it calls the “most Australian Hilux ever developed,” set to arrive in Australian showrooms in just weeks. While the US-market Tacoma shifted to the GA-F platform in 2022, the ninth-generation Hilux continues on the established IMV platform used by the previous model.
Design and Platform
The latest Hilux keeps the core cab largely unchanged but focuses on meeting buyers' specific needs in Australia, according to Toyota.
Powertrain Options
- The 2.8-litre ‘1GD’ turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine returns, delivering 150 kW and 500 Nm with a six-speed automatic transmission.
- Manual variants have torque capped at 420 Nm.
- Dual-cab SR5 models and above feature a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that adds 8.5 kW and 65 Nm at low speeds, similar to the current generation.
- There will be 16 diesel variants available, including single-, extra-, and dual-cab configurations, with both 4×2 and part-time 4×4 drivetrains.
Future Powertrains
Toyota confirmed a fully electric Hilux version is coming in 2026, followed by a hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) model projected for 2028. Currently, no hybrid or plug-in hybrid versions are planned, though these options have not been ruled out.
