Friendship club builds friendships, increasing inclusion

Building inclusive friendships at the University of Nevada

The Best Buddies club, organized under the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, brings together students at the University of Nevada, Reno to promote inclusion and understanding. The club focuses on connecting neurodiverse students and those with disabilities with their peers through genuine one-to-one friendships.

“In high school, I witnessed how separated neurodiverse students were in school and was disappointed. It is why I chose this club – it fills my cup,” said Taylor Hall, current Best Buddies president and a third-year student in the speech pathology and audiology program.

Best Buddies’ mission and vision

Best Buddies is a global organization dedicated to fostering individual friendships, supporting integrated employment, nurturing leadership, encouraging inclusive living, and providing family support. The University of Nevada chapter continues this mission on campus, helping to bridge social divides and create opportunities for every student to feel part of the community.

Growing community and renewed leadership

Since its founding in 2011, the club has grown steadily and now includes 63 members. After a pause during the pandemic, it was relaunched in 2024 under the guidance of Jessica Stewart, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, an assistant professor in speech pathology and audiology who serves as the faculty advisor. Though student-led, the club benefits from her mentorship and organizational direction.

Changing how inclusion is lived

Across history, people with disabilities have often faced social exclusion in schools, workplaces, and communities. Best Buddies aims to transform this reality, ensuring that everyone has a place in campus life and the confidence to build lasting friendships.
