The government of Côte d’Ivoire announced that construction of the Abidjan Y4 ring road will be completed by the end of December 2025. The project, spanning 55 kilometers, aims to reduce the chronic congestion in the city’s central areas.
Minister of Equipment and Road Maintenance, Dr. Amédé Koffi Kouakou, confirmed the near completion of the project during an inspection visit.
“The Abidjan ring road, known as the Y4 Motorway, will be completed by the end of December 2025,” said Dr. Kouakou.
According to the ministry, most sections of the route are now finished or nearing completion:
The project is jointly financed by the African Development Bank and the Ivorian government at a total cost of approximately 218 million dollars. It forms part of the larger Abidjan Urban Transport Project, which seeks to modernize city infrastructure and reduce travel time across the metropolitan area.
According to Ageroute, traffic congestion in Abidjan continues to grow as the number of vehicles increases while existing major roads still pass through the city center and port areas.
Once operational, the Y4 Motorway will redirect through-traffic away from downtown Abidjan, significantly improving mobility and logistics. It is also expected to support economic development by connecting industrial zones and residential suburbs more efficiently.
The Y4 ring road marks a major step in easing Abidjan’s persistent traffic bottlenecks, signaling Côte d’Ivoire’s commitment to modern infrastructure and sustainable urban mobility.
