O.M. Irwin School celebrates 150 years

As students filled the gymnasium, they looked out at the crowd of parents, teachers, and community members gathered for the O.M. Irwin School's 150th anniversary celebration.
"It's a special day," said Principal Pam Scull.
The school was founded in 1866 by Francis Bradley and was named after his brother-in-law, O.M. Irwin. The school's first building was a small, one-room structure that stood on the same site as the current building.
"Mr. Irwin was a very kind and generous man," said Darla Miller, a member of the school's board of trustees. "He donated land and money to build the school."
Over the years, the school has grown and evolved to meet the needs of its students. In 1912, the school moved into a new building that was constructed with funds raised by the community.
"The community has always been very supportive of our school," said Scull.
Today, the school serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade and has a strong focus on STEM education.
"We're proud of our students and the work they do," said Scull.
The celebration included a number of activities, including a historical display, a timeline of the school's history, and a slideshow of photos from throughout the years.
Students also performed a number of songs and plays, including a rendition of "We Will Rock You" that got everyone on their feet.
As the celebration came to a close, Scull thanked everyone for coming out to support the school.
"We're grateful for the community's support and look forward to many more years of serving our students," she said.
"It's a great place to be," said Miller.
"They've done a fantastic job of celebrating our school's history," said longtime community member and former school board member, Sonja Bettencourt.
"It's a testament to the hard work and dedication of the teachers, staff, and students," she said.
