On 14 February 2023, PEN International and the Mexican Writers' Centre (Centro Mexicano de la Escritura) expressed their concern regarding the charges brought against journalist Emilio Gutiérrez Sánchez.
Emilio Gutiérrez Sánchez is a Mexican journalist who has been in exile in the United States since 2011 due to the threats he received after exposing the involvement of Mexican military personnel in the disappearance of 193 civilians in the state of Tamaulipas.
On 9 February 2023, the Mexican government issued a diplomatic alert regarding the presence of Emilio Gutiérrez Sánchez in the United States, although the alert was not taken seriously by the US authorities.
“The charges against Emilio are a clear attempt to intimidate him and to silence him. It is unacceptable that the Mexican government is trying to criminalize a journalist who has been in exile for more than a decade due to the threats he received for doing his job.”
—Fernando Escalante Gonzalbo, President of the Mexican Writers' Centre
PEN International and the Mexican Writers' Centre call on the Mexican government to drop the charges against Emilio Gutiérrez Sánchez and to respect his freedom of expression and movement.
Author's note: The Mexican government's actions against Emilio Gutiérrez Sánchez demonstrate a clear attempt to silence a journalist and undermine the rule of law. The international community must stand in solidarity with Emilio and demand an end to this egregious abuse of power.
