Nearly 150 unhoused community members returned to HomewardBound on October 13 after a 72-hour closure.
“You’re going to have a lot of people end up in the hospital because of this, because of the cold weather. The fact that they’re aged and they’re not exactly in the healthiest physical shape. There’s no place else to go.”
Some residents shared their experiences, including Crystal, who said:
“One night, I was out in the rain. It was cold and wet, and that’s okay. You know, I’ve been homeless in the wintertime before,”and Blaine, who stated:
“All they told us was, ‘You guys are resilient. You’ll figure it out.’ We’re resilient? I mean, really, is that the best you can tell us? You give us no options, no nothing, no anything, no alternatives to what’s going on,”
Residents are questioning the city's response and seeking alternatives. Author's summary: Residents return to shelter after 72-hour closure.
