An emaciated dog named Drifter was rescued by Cape of Good Hope SPCA inspector Lwazi Ntungele, who waded through fast-moving water to save him.
The rescue took place on 11 October 2025 and was a testament to training, courage, and community support.
Lwazi faced a lifelong fear to do it, as he could not swim.
However, earlier this year, the SPCA arranged free swimming lessons with Finz Aquatics for Lwazi and fellow inspector Lee Prins, giving him the confidence to enter the water when lives were at risk.
The rescue was a success, and Drifter was carried to safety by Lwazi.
