As a student of El Camino College and an employee, I believe that the cost of textbooks should be factored into the cost of a class itself.
With rising student tuition and education costs, many colleges have not taken necessary measures to alleviate student expenditures. I've found that costs for class materials are an additional way to push students into spending more on required reading.
This semester, I signed up for three classes at $46 per unit for California residents, plus additional required fees. While this is more affordable than private colleges, there is room for improvement in terms of transparency about where students' money is spent.
