A small trial suggests that a low-fat vegan diet could help adults with type 1 diabetes reduce their insulin needs.
Researchers conducted a 12-week study with 58 adults, randomizing them to either a low-fat vegan diet or a conventional portion-controlled plan. The vegan group consumed only plant foods, keeping added fats low, with a diet consisting of roughly 75% carbohydrates, 15% protein, and 10% fat.
No increase in hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia was observed, and HbA1c improved in both groups.
