A senior UN official has warned that Gaza risks a "lost generation" due to the devastating state of its education system.
According to Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF's regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, nearly all children in Gaza have been without formal schooling for a third consecutive year.
"If we don't start a real transition for all children in February, we will enter a fourth year. And then we can talk about a lost generation."
The warning comes after two years of war between Israel and Hamas, which has left 85% of schools in Gaza destroyed or unusable.
Only a fraction of children are currently attending makeshift classrooms, with education still largely halted.
