‘We’re the Resistance’

Reflections on Coping with ICE Raids in Los Angeles

Rossana Pérez, a refugee and immigrant advocate, reflects on how to cope with the trauma of ICE raids in Los Angeles, drawing from her own experiences as a survivor of a death squad in El Salvador.

Pérez, a professor, writer, and activist, was arrested and imprisoned in her native El Salvador for months before arriving in Los Angeles over 40 years ago. Now, she supports others who have overcome similar trauma in their home countries to continue their lives in the United States.

There is also reason for hope amidst the trauma.

The ongoing immigration raids in Los Angeles have impacted the physical and mental health of Latinos across the city. However, not everyone can turn to a doctor or therapist for aid. Elders like Pérez, 67, often provide vital support and direction.

According to Pérez, Latinos and other immigrant communities can find hope, examples, and guidance in history to survive this tumultuous time.
