AAP FactCheck examines a claim on social media that atmospheric carbon dioxide cannot warm the earth's surface because "heat only goes up" and finds it to be false.
Experts assert that heat is transferred in all directions, including downwards, via radiation, which is how carbon dioxide (CO2) warms the planet.
"Having reached the air, CO2 no longer has any possible heating effect," the post reads. "Have you forgotten what we learned at school, that heat goes UP??"
Despite this claim, warm air rising does not preclude atmospheric carbon dioxide from warming the earth's surface, as CO2 transfers heat in all directions through radiation, a process observable with scientific instruments.
