US communication giant AT&T has made a significant step forward in the evolution of wireless networks, completing its first Open RAN call using third-party radios over its commercial network.
AT&T initially announced its plan to modernize its wireless network almost two years ago as part of a $14bn deal with Ericsson, which was described as "industry-defining" and a "pivotal milestone" for the Open RAN industry.
The deal involved Ericsson building a 5G network platform for AT&T, including the deployment of its 5G Open Radio Access Networks products, to support AT&T's nationwide Open RAN ambitions.
