PostMag writer Fionnuala McHugh has lived a life free of clutter – and feels all the better for it.
In 1992, a British newspaper sent her to New York to interview Paul Mellon, who was 85 at the time and considered the wealthiest American. The Mellon family fortune originated from the Mellon Bank, founded in 1870.
Mellon was also known as "the last civilised collector" by a London gallery owner. His Manhattan town house featured an impressive collection of artwork, including a Canaletto, Constables, a Stubbs, Bonnards, a Sargent, a Cézanne, a Vuillard, and a Degas.
