Fukuoka Tests AI Waste Sorting Tool | Fukuoka Now
Fukuoka City has launched a pilot service using generative AI to identify plastic waste through its official LINE account.
Ahead of citywide plastic waste separation starting in February 2027, users can photograph items to see if they qualify as recyclable plastics, receiving instant guidance on disposal.
The tool was introduced at an event in Chuo Ward on October 25 to promote recycling awareness.
Fukuoka had delayed separation due to costs but moved forward following national recycling reforms in 2022.
Officials hope the AI tool will make sorting easier and boost participation in environmental efforts.
