City officials in Bloomington consider homelessness a public health emergency, particularly with the approaching winter months.
A proposed emergency declaration would grant the city manager the authority to waive certain building code requirements, allowing for increased shelter capacity.
“Homelessness continues in Bloomington, with residents at risk during extreme weather, and temporary flexibility remains necessary to ensure adequate indoor shelter capacity,”
say city staffers in a report, as the city council is set to discuss the declaration on Monday night.
Notably, progress is being made on The Bridge, a $2.5 million village of small cabins, but the city still requires temporary measures to address the crisis.
