Zhang Shuai and Wang Yafan lost in straight sets, while top seed Belinda Bencic continued her climb into the world top 10.
Bencic, the Swiss No 1, was ranked '913 or something' a year ago, but has since made significant progress.
- Zhang Shuai lost to Russia's Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-1.
- Wang Yafan was defeated by Bencic 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 16 minutes.
"I felt good on the court," Bencic said. "I tried to play aggressively, tried to play my game, and it worked out well.
Bencic's victory marks her sixth win in a row, following her win at the Japan Open.
