Timothy Martin, a climate activist and architect from North Carolina, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for his role in a 2023 protest at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
Martin was convicted of conspiracy and injuring government property after he and another protester, Joanna Smith, splashed paint on the display case and base of Edgar Degas's La petite danseuse de quatorze ans (Little Dancer Aged Fourteen, 1880).
Courtesy of Declare Emergency, the incident involved Martin and Smith smearing paint on the sculpture's case and base.
Martin's sentencing came after a federal jury found him guilty in April. The protest was affiliated with the group Declare Emergency.
