Grateful Dead Vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay Dies at 78
Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, the Alabama-born singer who performed with the Grateful Dead, has died at 78, according to The Associated Press.
A family spokesperson said she passed away Sunday at Alive Hospice in Nashville after battling cancer.
Before joining the Grateful Dead in the 1970s, Godchaux-MacKay built a prolific career as a session singer in Muscle Shoals and Memphis, contributing backing vocals to songs by:

- Percy Sledge - “When a Man Loves a Woman”
- Neil Diamond
- Boz Scaggs
- Cher
She lent her voice to classic 1960s hits.
